Your Marriage is Not Threatened
July 12, 2004

(Selected republication of old entries from the pre-Movable Type journal...)

Those who know me know I'm not a political lad. But this one's important. The US Senate is debating whether to amend the constitution to make sure that gay people can't marry. If passed, this will be only the second time in our history that an amendment that takes away rights instead of guaranteeing them is added to the US Constitution. The first time it happened (Prohibition--yeah, leave it to the guy who doesn't drink anymore to paint Prohibition as a bad thing...), it took another amendment to repeal it.

I'll be calling both my senators tomorrow. Here's what I sent today:
I am a Bible-believing Christian who believes it is obvious that gay marriage is a civil rights issue. Letting other people marry is no threat to my own marriage, which is sanctioned by God, not by the government.

Having the need to pass a law to "protect" heterosexual marriages from other people who want to marry each other in their own way, I believe, demonstrates a clear LACK of faith in God, a clear trust in government instead of God, and a clear abuse of civil rights.

It sickens me that--especially in this day and age-- this amendment is even being considered, and it grieves me that it is being supported in Christ's name. Looking at history, and consequently the way the future will prove us right or wrong, what good can come out of an amendment to the constitution that takes away the rights of our citizens INSTEAD of protecting them?

I am truly sorry that the people representing me in Washington feel threatened by gay marriage. But their fear of others does not justify denying the rights of those they supposedly represent. If they cannot find a more productive way to deal with their fear, then that is our mistake. We will from now on only elect people who can.
Email and mail your representatives. Call your senators. Sign a petition. This one's important. And if it means some idiot's going to list "gay marriage" as the reason why he wants a divorce from his wife, well, that's a chance I'm willing to take.
