Back to Journal ![]() « Dear Joe Bloe | Writing Dare, Forum, Future, Etc | Film - Millions » Writing Dare, Forum, Future, Etc May 11, 2005 Between April 15 and May 15, I've been taking part in a create-your-own writing dare started by Jenn Reese, and I figured I'd take a page out of Jay Lake's book and write a story every week for four weeks. As an incredibly slow writer (one of my more recently submitted stories took 3 years from concept to first submission) prolificacy isn't one of my strengths. I'm on week four, still working on my third story. And I've been writing every day, at about the same time, out of steam through most of it. The writing's crap. Crappier than the worst of my "regular" work. And I don't know how much of it is forcing myself to write a way in which my mind doesn't want to work, and how much of it is growing pains. I'm trying to imagine it's like when you go from being a relatively fast hunt-and-peck keyboardist to someone who knows proper hand position. At first it's an incredible slowdown, but if you can push through, you'll be faster and more efficient in the long run. So are these sacrificial stories or what? And not having an acceptance in a while (for the work I am proud of) isn't helping the old ego. I've also been working at a community theater's box office for these four weeks, which has been breaking up my days more than I expected. But I've managed to get a lot done, especially with Telltale and contracts. Two more third party distributors are interested in reselling Telltale's recordings and I've got more and more interested contributors. Construction's still going on next door, so recording-time is even further reduced, but I've been pleased with what I've been able to release. And, due to popular demand, I've relaunched the forum. But, then, as with the commenting system on the audiobook pages themselves, the people who most adamantly requested that I bring back the forum aren't interested in posting, so it's becoming more frustrating than beneficial. Over 350 people on the newsletter, you'd think a few of them would be willing to answer a poll. You know, I"ve kept this journal since 1998 and I don't think it has ever been exactly a blog by any retroactive standard. But the posts I've been making on the forum to try and drum up some conversation are similar to what gets posted on many blogs (regurgitated info and links, mostly). I was just thinking that if I have to reprioritize anytime soon, the journal's going to be the first to go. At any rate, pity party's over. Back to work.
