This One Hurts A Little Bit
April 21, 2001

(Selected republication of old entries from the pre-Movable Type journal...)

Well, this should be about the last of them.

Since I stopped actively sending stuff out, the final few rejections, changes of policy (Muse It sent me a notice that they no longer pay; would I like to still be considered?), and even an acceptance (like the one from Cyber Age Adventures three months ago) have been filtering in, and I think it's likely that this latest one will be the last response I'll likely receive until I start actively submitting again (more on this in a moment).

I received a 5 month rejection from Rough Beasts last night. I can brush off most rejections pretty quickly, but I had hight hopes for this one, so this one stings. Still, the editor claimed not enough time to reply about each submission, but took the time to write a few comments at the bottom anyway, that I came "very close," that she's impressed with my "mastery of formal verse, which is a rare thing these days," and that she hopes I'll submit to her other projects. It actually was a pretty positive reply, even if it was a rejection.

But it still stings.

So since I'm making Thursdays my "Submission Nights" where I'll prepare submissions to mail out Fridays (and where I'll be doing even more submissions once I'm married (yes, go ahead and groan, those few who didn't see it coming)), and in the interest of getting back in the saddle again, I'm thinking my first submission should be to this editor, to one of her other projects. Tonight.

...

So I've 103 rejections down now. Toby told me he's coming up on 400. I've a long way to go there.
