Orange County allows for appeals of vehicle values within 30 days of their billing date (only a few days left). If you you have high mileage on your vehicle (in excess of 15,000 per year), significant damage, or a significantly lower purchase price than the tax value, you can save money on your bill by sending a letter to the RMV with proof of the situation.

A three-sentence letter and a copy of my latest e-check inspection just saved me about $20 due to excessive mileage early in the life the vehicle, and I had my revised bill within a week. Mailing address and more info at http://www.co.orange.nc.us/revenue/registered_motor_vehicles.htm.

Appeals must be done each and every year, so if you appealed last year, you won't repeat the savings unless you do it again.
