A science fiction novel by Maureen McHugh.China Mountain Zhang is a self-discovery novel with grand-scale themes, but focuses on internal rather than epic changes: A young engineer tries to find his place in a China-dominated world. It's probably the first coming-of-age novel I've ever read with a homosexual protagonist, and my first in-genre book that really represented the kind of SF I wanted to write ("speculative" work by "mainstream" writers Toni Morrison, Laura Esquivel, Kurt Vonnegut, and the like would be examples of "outside" the genre). It's subtle, it's relevant, and it's a great story. |
