Music - Black Sheep
March 27, 2005

Black Sheep An album by Martin Sexton.

Fun-sized just got us tickets to Martin Sexton in Raleigh next month. It'll be my first live concert in years, if you don't include local groups and friends (and Lucy Kaplansky, which was a fluke. A wonderful, wonderful fluke). I still regret never seeing Fruvous live.

I think I first heard Sexton on WKSU's folk weekends from my Akron, Ohio days, one of those regional treats that spoils you for the rest of the country's almost-as-good NPR.

Sexton's voice is freer than improv and smoother than pudding. His guitar is sometimes dirty, sometimes elegant, and even with minimal backup musicians and voices, he makes the simplest compositions deep and vibrant.

He's one of those singer/songwriters who's so unique and accessible that you wonder why some conglomerate hasn't billed him as the next James Taylor. For crying out loud, it's an outrage that we can afford his tickets.

Black Sheep is my favorite Sexton album by a nose, though my favorite song of his, My Maria can be found on The American.

Some artists make me want to practice my guitar and get as good as they are. Guys like Sexton make me want to put my guitar down and enjoy the music.
