The first few pages of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are cemented in my memory as some of the funniest prose I've ever read. His letter to Rolling Stone pleading for heroine money while on the '72 campaign trail is one of the few things I remember about The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in Cleveland. Damnit, I'm not strong enough to do one of these every week. Other than being one of the founders of the creative nonfiction movement in literary circles and one of the obvious influences in a lot of my favorite modern writers (hell, Warren Ellis practically carries Hunter's torch sometimes), I feel I know less about the the man than I do about the the legend. He was an impulsive guy; maybe he would have wanted it that way. "For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampeled." Filed under Journal, Peers & Peerless
