Film - Millions
May 15, 2005

Millions Saw Danny Boyle's Millions last night, an incredibly imaginative riff on the old "finding a pile of money" conceit. I'm going back to my analogy conceit to recommend it. If Studio Ghibli is my Disney, then Millions is my ET. It's about imagination and vulnerability after the loss of a parent, and is quite simply one of the most inspiring kid's fables I've seen on film.

Boyle mixes his trademark pacing (think Trainspotting) with some apparent fantasy lessons from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (think Amelie and The City of Lost Children). I was never caught in the thrall of E.T., and, given my taste for SF and early special effect blockbusters, I always figured that was an anomaly. But now I see that my inner fan was just waiting for something more my temperament.

The plot? No, I'm not giving away a thing. But is that really Boyle? His 28 Days Later breathed new life into the zombie genre (what's more scary than getting surrounded by zombies ? How about zombies moving really, really fast?), and Trainspotting was one of the more interesting films of any genre in the last decade. I need to rent his back catalog to figure out what gems I've missed. Wonder if he's directed a romantic comedy in there somewhere...

And, oh yeah, the soundtrack rocks.
