I've been listening to the band Eddie from Ohio since my days in Ohio. They're not from Ohio. They're from Virginia. I'm from Ohio. Hi.
If I remember right, they met in college in Virginia and there were two Eddies in their circle of friends. One of them from Virginia, the other from Ohio. They called them "Eddie" and "Eddie from Ohio." The former became their drummer and the latter supplied the name of the band. I first heard them on WKSU's wonderful weekend folk program hosted by Jim Blum almost ten years ago (I first heard Martin Sexton on the same program). They were a folk version of Moxy Fruvous. They're playful. Energetic. Lyrically smart. Harmoniously brilliant. And they're known for their incredible live shows. I've long regretted never seeing Fruvous live. This weekend I avoided making the same mistake with Eddie. They played two sets at the 26th Annual Festival of the Eno in the Triangle on Saturday. I was a happy boy. I'm normally a CD guy, since it's so much cheaper (and less fleeting) than seeing bands live. And I guess I've seen enough lackluster shows to be skeptical. Their first set was great. Mostly new songs I hadn't heard yet. But when EFO opened their four o'clock set with "Old Dominion" (a favorite of mine), I suddenly understood why people quit their jobs and follow their favorite groups on tour. I won't miss another chance to see them again. I can't believe it was 2005 before I saw my first show of EFO or Martin Sexton. Now Moxy Fruvous has six months to do a reunion show, and this'll be the year I hit the triple crown. Filed under Carrboro Area, Journal, Peers & Peerless
