Back to Journal ![]() « How much do SF writers earn? | Arthur Miller (1915-2005) | Film - Army of Darkness » Arthur Miller (1915-2005) February 12, 2005 Arthur Miller died last night (well, Thursday night--it's 2AM on Saturday morning, so I still consider it Friday night). A few of us actors were just talking about Miller during last night's intermission of Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten at Deep Dish Theater in Chapel Hill. It was opening night so I guess we were all feeling kind of reflective. Miller's name came up as the only living playwright in a hastily-created category that includes O'Neill and Tennessee Williams. Who knows? Tom or John might've spoken his name the very minute history sought to correct that oversight. Our show tonight was certainly informed by the passing of one of these greats. Paul (Deep Dish's artistic director) asked the audience to give Miller a round of applause before the show, rather than the usual moment of silence. And I walked on stage as inspired by that as I was by O'Neill's script. Which probably says more about my focus or acting ability than it does about Paul's words. And I'm thinking maybe the misprint in the Independent Weekly crediting Williams with writing A Moon for the Misbegotten was just an attempt to put those three great, departed masters of the craft together on earth as they celebrate their first reunion away from it. Maybe we were unwittingly doing the same thing at last night's intermission. He had the right dreams. All, all right. Farewell to the guy who taught me that man is not a piece of fruit. World's different now. Filed under Journal, Peers & Peerless
Comments: Discuss this entry at LiveJournalMan, strange coincidence for me because it had been years since I had last read something by Miller -- until about two weeks ago when I finally got around to reading Death of a Salesman, which I really enjoyed. Thanks, by the way, for stopping in over on my site. I've talking to Mike Jasper a bit about audio recordings and your site (very cool!), so it was a nice surprise to see a subject of conversation appear in by blog's comment section. Posted by: Jamie Bishop at February 14, 2005 1:30 PM Thanks, Jamie. I found out about your site through Jason Lundberg's post about the interview. I saw "audio" and "Carrboro" and had to check it out. There's probably a project or two in one of our heads which we should work on together or at least a coffee we should meet for at Weaver Street. I'll be in touch. Posted by: Alex at February 15, 2005 12:35 PM Very, very coincidentally, I was rehearsing to play Rev. Parris in "The Crucible" when Miller died. What an amazing play, and our cast was ablaze with it during our 1-weekend run last weekend. Posted by: Brian Jones at February 23, 2005 11:41 AM Yeah, I'll bet, Brian. Man, that's a lot of work putting together The Crucible for a one weekend run. I'll bet it made the experience even more specific each night though. Thanks for sharing that.
