Back to Journal ![]() « Catch Up | 2007 Submission Log: Weeks 5 and 6 | 2007 Submission Log: Weeks 7 and 8 » 2007 Submission Log: Weeks 5 and 6 February 10, 2007 Subs 349 - 354 Fiction to McSweeney's (my third sub), Strange Horizons (4th fiction sub, 7th sub including poetry), Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine (my first), Analog (my 9th), and Shimmer (first). And my thirteenth entry into the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest. Rejections 229 - 239 Here we go. Rejections from Fantasy Magazine (one month), multiple New Yorker Caption Contest rejections (a few of which I'd forgotten to include in previous rejection tallies), ASIM (like a day), The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (18 days, from Gordon van Gelder!), Clarkesworld (35 days), Ideomancer (30 days), and Realms of Fantasy (146 days to a handwritten note; see below). Of Interest: My milestone Sub #350 was the story to Strange Horizons. The Realms of Fantasy response was neither BFOD, nor YFOP. I've only ever received BFODs before. The story was sent Sept 16, 2006. On October 27 I got an email from slush editor Douglas Cohen saying he wanted to think about the story. On November 11, he let me know he planned to pass it up to editor Shawna McCarthy (but it might not happen until the end of the month). The rejection was a hand-written note on my cover letter from SM: "I liked this quite a bit, but..." This is a first for me. I got the official rejection from my Strange New Worlds entry, with a note about why it was rejected. One of the tips I found (after sending my entry in) was how the editor liked stories that started with an action-packed "bang." Mine didn't. So he says he didn't get very far into my story before he stopped reading. And so it goes. The two new, non-Clarion stories I mentioned working on here are both done and in slush piles. Still working on that fourth Clarion revision. Maybe it's a good thing that I'm still plugging away at this shorter stuff. A novel would kill me right now. |
