Tommy (The PSA)
tommy.mov In 2003, MoveOn.org sponsored a "Bush in 30 Seconds" contest/challenge for a public service announcement (PSA) that would rally people around the cause of voting whatshisname out of office in 2004. Around 1500 entries were submitted, and Tommy was one of them.

I wanted to create something upbeat and fun rather than taking the "this is what Bush has done wrong" route. Our recipe: Take some old-school physical comedy. Put it to a traditional-sounding jingle. Stir vigorously and see if you can't dillute voter disillusionment, one of the big causes of low voter turnout--which is one of the bigger frustrations on either side of the political aisle.

DP and Lights: Bergan Sipe. Sound engineer: Jerry Walterick. Actors: Katja Hill and Alex Wilson. PA: Austin Johnson. Director, Writer, Editor, Singer, Guitarist: AW.

"Tommy" is distributed under a Creative Commons license and I encourage visitors to distribute and screen it however they see fit.

For those who enjoy the piece (the first download below), I'm also making available an outtake/gag reel, an MP3 of the jingle, and an earlier concept draft of the PSA with an "aged film" look.

Quicktime file require Quicktime 6 or later, available as a free download here. iPod Video (.m4v) now available, playable on iPods released after October 2005.
