Writers of the Future (sometimes mentioned online as WOTF) is a market for SF.
It is a quarterly contest and annual anthology series, publishing stories and novelettes (up to 17,000 words) in the science fiction and fantasy genres. There is no entry fee.
Quarterly postmark deadlines are as follows:
Quarter 1: December 31
Quarter 2: March 31
Quarter 3: June 30
Quarter 4: September 30
Each quarter, numerous honorable mentions (name changed from "quarterfinalists" starting with 2007 quarter 2), ten semifinalists, and eight finalists are chosen by a contest judge (the current judge is author and former WOTF winner K D Wentworth). The semifinalist stories each receive a critique. The finalists are read by a panel of quarter judges, who choose a first (with a $1,000 prize), second ($750), and third place ($500) story.
The first place stories of the four quarters are then judged by another panel, and one is chosen for an additional award (an additional $4,000). The twelve winning stories and the occassional non-winning finalist are offered publication in the annual Writers of the Future Anthology, for additional payment.
