Payrate or pay rate or rate of pay is the compensation a writer can expect from a given publication.

A payrate for a market (publication, contest, etc) may be determined by:

Wordcount (example: 5 cents per word)

Pagecount (example: $10 per page)

Flat fee (example: $200 per story).

Linecount, usually for poetry (example: $5 per line).

Payrate may vary based on experience and notoriety of the writer (example: 5 cents per word for beginners, 7 cents for established professionals).

A minimum payrate is a factor some writers use to determine whether a market reaches "professional" standards.
