From a poem in Alice in Wonderland, it has developed various meanings. Sometimes it is a direful monster, as in the comedy movie Jabberwocky. Sometimes it means nonsense, or nonsense poetry. Attempts to give meaning to the nonsense in "Jabberwocky" have added a few words to the English language, including via gaming, where programs or game rules hand out "vorpal blades."
