[edit] Erotic Romance
Refers to the level of graphic sex in a romance. Pianka listed three levels of sex in romances, but these days, we can list four:
- sweet romance
- spicy romance
- steamy romance
- erotic romance or romantica™
The erotic romance is erotica with soul: it ends with an emotional commitment between the lovers. Some publishers only do hetero twosomes in erotic romance. Others will take stories of lesbian and gay lovers, triads, and other unusual but romantic commitments.
Writing the story on the romance template rather than the template for erotica moves it more into the steamy romance catagory for publishing. Some have noted that too much "external story," too much business that isn't erotically oriented, will get a story sent back by the publishers of this genre.
This makes a story of a triad romance that isn't all about sex challenging to sell, as the steamy romance markets are all interested only in hetero or homosexual pairs.
