"Genre" really just means "type" or "category." So while some people refer to "genre" fiction, other think "mainstream" and "literary fiction" are just themselves genres. These are some of the categories into which your work may fall. Remember: genre pigeon-holing is strictly a sales tool. The publisher wants to know in which area of the bookstore your book will shelve, which special advertising markets to pitch it to, whether it suits their magazine's readership.

Genre refers to what you write about or how you write it, not the length. For that matter, the form is minor. You can have fantasy poetry or fantasy screenplays as well as fantasy novels or short stories.
