Capclave
From Guidevines, a user-editable wiki for writersFrom Guidevines
Capclave is a small convention devoted to written fiction. Its motto is "where reading is not extinct." Sponsored by The Washington Science Fiction Association, Capclave officially began in 2001. Capclave is the descendant of Disclave, a convention along the same lines and themes, that ran from 1950 until 1997. There was no Disclave (nor Capclave) in 1998, 1999, or 2000. (There was also no convention, albeit for unrelated reasons, in 1952, 1954-7, 1963, or 1964.) Disclave 1998 was canceled shortly before the convention date. More information is available from WSFA, but damage to the hotel resulting from activation of the anti-fire sprinklers at the 1997 convention may have been a factor.
From the Capclave Web site:
Capclave is a small relaxed literary convention with a program that usually focuses on the short fiction form. Our Guests of Honor and other notable authors, editors, artists, and fans of the short fiction form will explore the creation and enjoyment of short fantasy and science fiction genre stories.
Past Capclaves have hosted discussions with authors and fans; readings by authors; a dealer's room with books, magazines, artwork, crafts, and other science fiction and fantasy related items; exhibits by artists; space science presentations from NASA; a hospitality suite; room parties; interesting conversations with other fans and professionals; and a relaxed atmosphere for visiting old friends and meeting new friends.
Because attendance is small and emphasis is on short fiction, writers, publishers, and editors are accessible and often willing to talk to individual members of the convention.
