Alternate history is a sub-genre of speculative fiction which primarily uses a divergence from known or actual historical events to provide its speculative element.

Types of stories most often classified as alternate history include the secret history, the "single point of divergence" tale and those set in fictionalized parallel worlds which, though clearly modeled on particular places and times from actual history, contain enough political, historical and fantastical divergences to prevent the fictionalized world from being confused with our own.

Other types of story closely linked to alternate history include time travel stories, steampunk and uchronia.
